Samsung Unpacked 2025 Recap

on

Samsung’s made a habit of kicking off the year with a big release.

And it turns out that 2025 is no different, as the Samsung Unpacked event on 22 January showed off the latest products we can expect from the Korean giants this year – plus a few teasers of what the future might hold.

So without further ado, let’s dig into the announcements.

The headliner for these events is always going to be Samsung’s mobile flagships: The Galaxy series.

This year’s no different. Samsung unveiled their next broadside in the ongoing smartphone wars with the S25, S25 Plus, and S25 Ultra.

The three phones continue the design trend that Samsung’s established over the last few years, with simple, functionally handsome looks (although the S25 Ultra does get a little curvier, compared to the previous iteration).

What’s inside is a different story: The entire Galaxy S25 range packs the still-novel Snapdragon Elite 8. This chipset appeared in a few phones towards the end of 2024, but its pairing with the Galaxy series is arguably its most high profile outing.

The new chip promises to deliver bigger power with less battery drain; Samsung claims the new phones will offer up to 40% better performance in comparison to the S24 range (we’ll need to wait for real world testing to verify these claims).

Beyond that, the expected improvements to cameras, screens and build are all present. This  includes a 50MP snapper for the S25 Ultra, and the introduction of Gorilla Corning Glass 2 – an anti-reflective, super-tough ceramic glass that should protect your screen from dings, while improving the overall viewing experience.

Like last year, there was also a big focus on artificial intelligence in these handsets. So much so, that it’s worth its own section.

Artificially Intelligent

As we kick off what is arguably the second year of the AI smartphone revolution, we’re starting to get a glimpse of the true vision of what the world’s biggest smartphone makers are planning.

The S25 series continues Samsung’s entanglement with Google, and deepens it, promising more intuitive interaction and better personalisation. And it’s all driven by on-device hardware, thanks to that Snapdragon chip, so things should feel pretty snappy.

AI will be present in other areas of your phone as well: Helping drive better low-light photography, allowing for advanced editing at the tap of a button, and even allowing for voice-based image generation.

A somewhat surprising change is the AI assistant who’ll be delivering your morning traffic update. Just about gone is Bixby, Samsung’s bespoke – and somewhat maligned – assistant launched in 2017. You can still use it, but Google’s Gemini is now the default assistant on your Samsung, accessed with the press of a button.

Honestly, this is a smart choice. Bixby never seemed to gain the traction that Samsung hoped, and Gemini’s connection to the broader suite of Google services makes it a natural choice for any smartphone manufacturer in the Android sphere.

That means you get the integration of Circle to Search, Google’s full suite of apps (allowing you to do things like adding a calendar item for an event more easily), Samsung’s own apps, and even a range of third-party apps.

Brilliant.

While the meat of Samsung’s presentation was dedicated to the phones and their attendant AI features, there was some time offered for other toys and tools.

Samsung is further deepening their collaboration with Google by working with Android XR. This seems to be a direct competitor to the tech Apple’s putting into their Apple Vision Pro headsets. They even had a prototype headset at the event. If last year’s Galaxy Smart Ring reveal is anything to go by, we’ll be seeing more of this device soon.

They also dedicated some time to discussing environmental efforts. Specifically, they touted the use of scaled cobalt recycling in battery manufacturing, reducing the impact of mining new cobalt for their phones.

AI remained a focus of home tech, too. Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Smart Things is designed to help you do everything from check on your pets, to reducing your energy consumption at home.

And, like seemingly every tech conference nowadays, the event closed off with a one-more-thing teaser, the return of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. An old friend brought back from retirement – but different. Where the edge we knew was a curved-screen flagship, the new Edge interprets its moniker differently, implied by its other name (we know, we’re confused too): The Galaxy S25 Slim.

Gone is the luscious curved screen, admittedly a bit of a magnet for cracks whenever you dropped the thing. No, the new edge is all about svelte looks. No specific specs have been released – like the Ring, it got a typically cryptic tease at the end of the presentation. What we know is that it’s roughly the size of the S25+, and rumours suggest a thickness of just 6.3mm. For those keeping score, that’s even skinnier than Apple’s ridiculous 7mm skinny iPad 10th Gen.

As for release dates? The S25 series drops on 7 February.

Because the Galaxy S25 looks cool. But the power of choice? So much cooler.
