Data-Driven Success: Tej Padia’s Journey

on

In today's data-driven world, businesses rely on information to make smarter decisions, optimise operations, and unlock new opportunities. Tej Padia, Rentoza’s Head of Data, is a leader at the forefront of this transformation.

As we continue to revolutionise the eCommerce retail space, Tej's role is pivotal in harnessing the power of data to drive growth, enhance customer experiences, and shape strategic direction.

Tej’s professional career has been one of growth, resilience, and transformation. From his eight-year role at EY to forensic accounting, and his leadership role as CFO and COO at a law firm, he’s developed a wealth of experience.

Then came 2020 – a turning point in his career. “I joined Rentoza as employee number one, partnering with the founders to take a bold vision from paper to reality,” he tells us. “Building the company from the ground up, I played a pivotal role in the set-up of all operational divisions within the firm.”

“What drew me to Rentoza was its mission: To disrupt access to technology in South Africa using a subscription-first model. It was a game-changing idea that resonated deeply with my belief in challenging conventions to create real impact.”

Tej plays a pivotal role in creating and maintaining the power behind Rentoza – and it’s down to really understanding and valuing the importance of data.

Data is powerful because it allows us to understand our customers, adapt to their needs, and make decisions with clarity. In the subscription space, where recurring relationships are the heart of the business, data becomes even more critical. It helps us predict customer behaviors, optimise pricing, and refine how we deliver value,” Tej explains.

He adds: “At Rentoza, data helps us remain focused on what matters – creating a seamless and trusted experience for our customers. It’s not about the numbers themselves but the stories they tell and how they guide us to make better decisions. Data ensures we can continuously improve, grow sustainably, and stay true to our mission.”

It’s been a rewarding four years of growth and hard work within his role. Of course, it comes with its own challenges. Weaving data into the DNA of a fast-growing company is no easy feat.

“Starting from scratch meant building systems, processes, and a culture that values insights over instincts,” Tej explains. “It’s been a journey of learning and adapting, and seeing the impact of those efforts in real-time has been incredibly fulfilling.”

“Another challenge, specific to our prepaid subscription model, has been finding creative ways to assess risk and forecast demand without relying on traditional credit data. These moments have pushed us to innovate, and the solutions we’ve developed have shaped the way we operate today. It’s been a collaborative effort, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come as a team.”

Tej believes that data will play an even more important role in the subscription industry going forward, moving beyond hindsight to foresight.

“Subscription businesses will rely more on predictive models to anticipate customer needs, improve retention, and refine offerings. At the same time, ethical data use will become non-negotiable. Customers are becoming more aware of how their data is used, and trust will play a key role in building long-term relationships.”

He adds “As the subscription space evolves, I believe data will help businesses become more personalised and responsive, while also enabling them to stay adaptable in a fast-changing world. It’s an exciting time to be working in this space, and I’m eager to see how these shifts unfold.”

So if you’re interested in following in Tej’s footsteps, here are his wise words of advice: “The best place to start is with curiosity. Data is all about solving problems, so focus on understanding the questions you’re trying to answer. Learn the basics – tools like Excel, SQL, and Python – but don’t get caught up in trying to master everything at once. The most important skill is learning how to use data to tell a story that drives action.”

“Also, don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Real learning happens when you tackle challenges head-on, even when they seem daunting. And remember, data isn’t just about the numbers – it’s about people, businesses, and making things better. Keep that in mind, and you’ll go far.”
