Galaxy users, beware, you’re in for a scare. Samsung’s latest OS updates are bringing big changes, which heavily impact the functionality of the third-party apps you have on your phone.
Here’s everything you need to know.
The Update
Galaxy is moving towards stronger security as consumers become more aware and concerned about their data being accessed and used against them. One way they’re doing this is through their new update, which officially launched on 1 August. This update introduces an enhanced security feature called Auto Blocker, which prevents unauthorised sources from being downloaded to your device.
“When enabled, Auto Blocker protects your Galaxy device and data by preventing the installation of applications from unauthorised sources and blocking malicious activity,” explains Samsung.
In simple terms, what this means is that only apps from authorised sources like the Galaxy Store or Play store can be installed on your phone. If you attempt to install apps from unknown or unauthorised sources, you’ll receive a pop-up alert, and Auto Blocker will prevent you from continuing with the installation.
Another feature is that malicious chargers, computers, and other devices won’t be able to send commands to your phone when connected using a USB cable. This prevents unauthorised access and manipulation of your device and data through USB commands.
Auto Blocker also enables Samsung Message Guard to protect messaging apps. When you receive a message with an image that’s suspected of containing malware, the image will be blocked to keep you safe.
Maximum Restriction
If you want to take things a step further, you can enable the Maximum Restrictions feature for added security. When this is enabled, some of your phone’s features will be restricted and others will be enabled. This includes:
1: Turns on App protection: Checks apps installed for malicious activity.
2: Blocks device admin apps: Prevents activation of device admin apps and work profiles to protect against potential malicious attacks.
3: Blocks auto downloading attachments: Prevents automatic downloads of message attachments to protect against malicious software, while still allowing manual downloads from trusted sources.
4:Blocks hyperlinks and previews: Protects you from accidentally clicking on hyperlinks or viewing preview images, keeping you safe from malicious websites.
5: Removes location data when sharing pictures: Prevents the recipient from being able to determine where the picture was taken when you attach a picture to a message in Samsung Messages or share a picture from Samsung Gallery.
6: Blocks shared albums: Protects you from sharing sensitive information and accepting invites from unknown senders.
While some users may find the Auto Blocker feature frustrating, it’s ultimately designed for your own protection. You can disable the Auto Blocker feature, but Samsung advises you keep it turned on for your own safety.
