Choosing a car to buy is an important and costly decision. There’s a lot to consider, and with all the options out there it can be an intimidating and overwhelming experience. There are two really important factors to choosing a car that we hope can help you decide; these are needs and budget. Let’s dive in.

Consider your needs

The first step is considering what you will use the car for. In other words, what are your needs? If you are (perhaps recently) unmarried with no (or grown up) children, a smaller vehicle might suit you down to the ground. Compared to, let's say, a new family of five who needs to be transported to schools and activities during the week. If you love the outdoors, a bakkie might be more attractive than a normal sedan. If you love to be seen cruising the coastal curves, a coupé might be a good choice, but if you want to pop a surfboard on top, you might want to look at an SUV.

Your personal needs will definitely impact the decision you make. But your needs are never straightforward enough to put you into a neat little box. You might have kids to cart off to school but you might also want to cruise those coastal curves on your own. You might need to slip through city streets by day but also like to mission into the bush on the weekends.

What makes this choice even tougher is that your needs might change. You might be a single man about town this year but who knows what could happen next year? You might think your family is the perfect size but who knows what miracles could come your way?

Consider your budget

Unless you're paying cash for your car, you'll need to think about vehicle financing. It’s also true that some cars may be cheaper to buy but more expensive to own. Even if two cars have about the same price, one might depreciate faster or cost more to insure and maintain.

Before you commit to a car, you should estimate its long-term ownership costs. These include depreciation, insurance, maintenance and fuel costs.

You'll also want to factor in an additional chunk of your monthly income to cover fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs. Knowing your budget beforehand will help you when negotiating your next vehicle.

Consider financial freedom

But, what if changing needs come with a changing budget? What if a long-term commitment doesn’t make room for new possibilities? What if the cost of car ownership limits your financial freedom?
